Six killed in road accident in Theni district
Jaya Menon, TNN Jun 12, 2013, 04.24PM IST
MADURAI: A pilgrimage trip turned tragic for six people in Theni district on Wednesday morning. The six, including two children, were flung from a pick-up truck in which they were travelling, after the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the parapet wall of a bridge. Twelve others, including the driver, managed to escape with injuries and were admitted to a government hospital. The condition of some of the injured remains critical, police said.
The deceased were identified as Ochathevar (53), Praveena Chandran (24), S Jayaprakash (10), M Papathi (70), S Chellathurai (24), all hailing from Cumbum in the district and V Bharathkumar from Puthupatti village.
Police said all the victims were related and had planned to visit Munusamy Temple near Karumathur, in Madurai district, to participate in the consecration function. They started from Cumbum in the wee hours, in the pick-up truck used to transport goods. Police said most of the victims were standing inside the vehicle, as there was no provision for seats in the goods carrier.
When the vehicle reached Seelayampatti, the van drifted away from the road and rammed into the parapet wall of a low-level bridge. In the impact, all those standing in the vehicle were flung to the ground. Motorists, who were crossing the place, witnessed the accident and called for an ambulance and the police. Most of them sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot, while few others died on the way to the hospital.
"It appears that the driver had dozed off, leading to the accident," a police officer said. Police said it was a serious violation to use goods carriers for the transportation of public. However, in many parts of Theni, pick-up trucks are used for ferrying people; primarily to take labourers to the cardamom and coffee estates.
